High Plains Environmental Center

Sustaining balance at every turn

McWhinney partnered with McStain Enterprises in 2001 to launch the High Plains Environmental Center (HPEC), a not-for-profit organization that manages more than 275-acres of lakes, wetlands and open space in Centerra. An integral part of what makes Centerra unique, the HPEC works to promote stewardship and educate the community on maintaining balance between the built and natural environments.

The HPEC operates through an endowment that is funded long-term by self imposed impact fees for commercial and residential development at Centerra. The HPEC is also working with major land owners at Centerra to ensure that open spaces are managed to enhance wildlife habitat and sustain corridor connections to larger environmentally sensitive areas.

HPEC activities include:

  • Protecting the wetlands and uplands surrounding Houts Reservoir and Equalizer Lake
  • Offering educational programs on the environment to the Northern Colorado community
  • Supporting local developers, planners and other consultants with information regarding sustainable design
  • Maintaining a 1.2-acre community garden that helps feed Loveland families in need
  • Forming partnerships with groups such as Loveland Youth Gardeners to advance community outreach
  • Future plans include development of a 7-acre botanic garden
